by Nick McCombs

On September 17, 2013, the Lion’s varsity soccer team faced the Urbana Hawks in Walkersville. The Hawks tamed the Lions with a final score of 6-3.

Walkersville scored first with a goal from David Frederick about ten minutes into the match. For the remainder of the half, Urbana took over, scoring two unanswered goals. Both of the goals were scored by #14 of the Hawks.

Going into the second half, the score was 2-1 with Urbana on top. The Hawks were able to extend their lead with two more goals. #22 of Urbana scored on a header and #11 was able to drive through the Lions’ defense for a goal of his own.

Even though the Lions were down by three points, they did not give up. Walkersville’s Zach Hommey scored on a free kick with 9:34 left in the match. Hommey’s goal was followed by two unanswered Urbana goals, both within a minute of each other. The Lions scored again with thirty seconds left, but it was too late to affect the outcome of the game. The score was 6-3 as the clock expired.

“We had a breakdown on defense,” said Tanner Seymour, junior.  Seymour added, “We could have tried harder and talked better.”

When asked what went right, junior Jody Brunty said “We stopped most of their runs and kept it in their zone for the most part.”

Peter Ontonyi, junior, said when asked about tonight’s game against Frederick, “We need to stay confident, communicate and trust each other.”

The Lions varsity soccer team looks to improve their record Thursday, September 19th against the Frederick Cadets.
