Lions Win Home Opener 24 – 7 Over Boonsboro
by Ben Johnson
The Walkersville Lions football team took care of business against a subpar Boonsboro squad. The Lions used a dominant running attack and made key defensive stops that propelled them to a 24-7 victory.
The Lions won the coin toss and elected to receive. Senior Brad Wolfe returned the kickoff to the Warriors 36 yard line; giving the Lions great field position. Nine plays later, senior, Patrick Cleveland bulldozed his way into the end zone from three yards out. The two point attempt was no good: Walkersville 6-Boonsboro 0.
Walkersville was able to gain good field position once again after some key defensive stops by the Lions, including one on a 4th down at midfield. Walkersville was able to capitalize off their good field position as they marched down the field with a superb rushing attack led by Junior Pat Sichette and Sophomore Chad Gleason. The drive ended with Gleason running 20 yards for a touchdown; the two point conversion failed yet again: Walkersville 12-Boonsboro 0.
Late in the quarter the Boonsboro offense was finally able to put together solid drive with a combination of long passes and short runs. The drive ended with Boonsboro putting the ball through the end zone for a Touchdown; Walkersville 12-Boonsboro 7 at the end of the first quarter.
After the offenses dominated the first quarter with three touchdowns between them, the second quarter saw the defenses shine. The only scoring drive came with about nine minutes to go in the half when Walkersville running back Cleveland was able to put six more points on the board after converting on a 4th down earlier in the drive; Walkersville 18-Boonsboro-7 at the half.
The only quarter with no points scored by either team, Boonsboro was able to put a solid drive together that saw them make their way deep into Lions territory but they were shut down at the goal line. Senior Matt Nalley said “The 3rd quarter was key, we couldn’t allow them to get back in the game.”
The highlight of the game came early in the 4th following running back Cleveland forced to leave the game because of cramps. Four plays after the injury Gleason found a hole in the Warriors defense and sprinted 80 yards down the field for a touchdown giving Gleason a pair of touchdowns on the night; Walkersville 24-Boonsboro-7.
Walkersville will use this victory as a stepping stone to success as they look to put the memories of last year out of their minds. “This game was just the first win in our journey towards a state title.” says senior, Bobby Stacey.
Senior Ian Covert echoed these thoughts saying “This win was big for us, let’s hope its leads to many more.”
