English Teacher Tom Kollai New Master of Ceremonies for Academic Tournament

by Hanna Houck

Walkersville english teacher, Tom Kollai has been selected to be Master of Ceremonies for the Academic Team competitions in Frederick County.

As Master of Ceremonies, Kollai must write all questions for the matches and read them at the matches.

For the past six years Kollai has been the coach for Walkersville’s team. When asked how the transition from coach to Master of Ceremonies Kollai said, “It’s been a little stressful because writing the questions is a little more time consuming than I would’ve anticipated but I think it’s going to be a lot of fun with the first match being tomorrow, I’m really looking forward to it.”

Kollai said that his ties at Walkersville won’t interfere with his neutrality. “I take my jobs very seriously and there will be no favoritism involved. The random nature of which team ends up with what questions doesn’t allow me to lean towards any team, even if I wanted to (which I don’t).”

When asked what the most challenging part of his position was Kollai joked, “Dressing up every Friday for the next two months because I hate wearing ties and suit coats,” but then said the question writing was something he is trying to master.

“Just interacting with the students from different schools rather than just knowing my 12 or 15 players as I was when I was coaching and getting to set the tone for the match and setting it at my pace and really getting to put my stamp on the program is something I’m really looking forward to,” said Kollai.
