NFL Teams That Won the Free Agency Signing Sweepstakes

by Sam Newman

As the draft approaches the free agency frenzy comes to an end. We saw superstars change teams and make millions upon millions. I am going to talk about the three best deal(s) that gave teams a bang for their buck.

  1. The Packers
  • They signed both Randall Cobb and Bryan Bulaga. Cobb is their second receiver and had an amazing year. He can be used on special teams too. He is a versatile receiver who would be a WR1 for almost every other team. Retaining him gives MVP Aaron Rodgers his second favorite receiver and gives the Pack a chance to make a deep playoff run. Keeping Bulaga was crucial. He is the teams starting OT and helps keep Rodgers pocket uncontested. If he wasn’t there they would have to look to the draft to find a decent tackle to replace him. They used a chunk of their cap but they are still in the green and have the money to make a couple big signings.
  • 2. The Patriots
  • They signed Jabaal Sheard who was being misused as a linebacker with the Browns. He is going to be put at his natural position, defensive end.  He is a great pass rusher and the Pats just got rid of Vince Wilfork. He will help make this great defense a little better by bringing his physicality and speed to the table. The Pats spent practically nothing to add this guy. That’s why this is the number two signing.
  • 3. The Titans
  • They added a ton of decent players and barely spent half their cap. They signed break-out safety Da’norris Searcy. He will be a day one starter and help improve their horrid run and pass defense. They also added linebackers Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan. These linebackers will help improve their 3-4 defense. This helped address their pass rushing needs. Other notable signings for this team: Harry Douglas WR, Brett Kern P, Anthony Fasano TE.

At the end it’s not about signing the big names, but signing those who can help your team at a reasonable price.
