10 Cloverfield Land a Science Fiction Film with Monsters and Mayhem
by Brian Thebau
Of the most recent sci-fi movies to come out, 10 Cloverfield Lane seems to be the most anticipated, with the production being done in secret.
Ever since the first trailer was released, people have been wondering what 10 Cloverfield Lane was going to be like. This review may contain some spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the movie, you might want to leave this page.
The movie starts off with the main character, Michelle, packing her things and leaving her home in New Orleans and driving to an unrevealed location. As she is driving, her ex boyfriend calls to try to persuade Michelle to come back and be with him.
As this is happening, a car smashes into hers and she passes out. When she wakes up, she is in a concrete room, frightened. After a few minutes, a large man named Howard appears and tells her that she is in his fallout shelter, which is protecting them from a terrorist attack that Howard believes was caused by the Russians.
Emmett, the 3rd resident in the shelter appears later at dinner and tells Michelle that he helped to build the shelter. His arm was injured due to him fighting his way into the shelter when Howard was closing the door as Emmett got there.
As the story progresses, we learn more about the characters’ pasts. Emmett was a slacker with a natural talent of running track, but gave it all up because he was scared to leave his hometown. Howard had a wife and daughter, who most likely died from the attack, and shows a picture of his daughter, Megan, to Michelle. We also learn that Michelle used to be a clothing designer and had been working on some new sketches before the events of the movie.
10 Cloverfield Lane was wonderfully written, keeping you on your toes for the entire film with twists and turns in the plot frequently. During Michelle’s escape, however, it starts to go downhill. The end seemed lazy and clichéd, with Michelle finding the exact components she would need to make a weapon, destroying an alien patrol attacking her.
Michelle then drives to Houston, Texas where a human resistance group is fighting the alien invaders. As she is driving a large alien ship is flashed on screen, hinting at another movie.
All in all, 10 Cloverfield Lane was a good movie and should definitely be watched.
