“Welcome to Wonderland” Allows WHS Students’ Talents to Shine
by Casey Cassels
On Thursday, May 19th, Walkersville High School held the Cabaret show that has been a part of our school for years. The show is held in the Walkersville High school auditorium and anyone has the opportunity to perform if they tryout and make it into the show.
Cabaret is a form of entertainment featuring music, song, dance, recitation, or drama. Many students throughout all grades in high school come to perform and give it their best. The theme for this year’s Cabaret was “Welcome to Wonderland.”
There were 17 different acts: 11 singers, two dancers, three show tunes (that involved singing and dancing), and one speed painter. Everyone definitely came to show what they were made of and there were a lot of very talented people on that stage.
This was senior Michaela Zeller’s first time performing for cabaret and she said it was a great experience and one she’ll never forget. Zeller told me that “ It was really incredible to be able to play with one of my best friends and a great way to end my high school career.” Zeller and senior Jillian Atelsek performed “Lost Boy” by Ruth B. While Atelsek was singing, Zeller played the piano with grace. Zeller also mentioned that she loved being able to share Atelsek’s gift with the audience.
Senior Rochelle Adjei and junior Jackie Jimenez were a part of a dance group including three other students. They danced to “A World of Dance” and did an amazing job. They really represented all kinds of dance. When ask what the experience was like for her Jimenez said “ It was really fun, especially being with my friends and doing something original. I would definitely do it again next year.”
Adjei also told me that she thought cabaret was a great experience. She added “ I did cabaret last year too but I think the team I had this year was better.”
Another astounding singer who was a soloist was junior Faith Gordon who sang “Set Fire to the Rain” by Adele. Faith said that “ I was kind of nervous but it went really well so I was pretty happy about that. I would do it again in a heartbeat.”
Even Coach Green had the opportunity to participate in this event. He sang alongside Sophomore Haleigh Eyler to “How Great Is Our God” by Chris Tomlin. Green told me that “singing on stage with Eyler was a blast. It was really cool being on the stage because I’m normally used to being on the football field.” Green is a football coach at Walkersville High so it was definitely a whole different experience for him.
Although there seemed to be a lot nervous participants before the show started, they knew that they had to step it up and face their fears for everyone watching and for themselves. For that reason, the show was remarkable and people’s talents were shining through. The audience sure did love it; there were lots of tears and applauses for all the participants in the show. It was definitely an experience those kids will never forget!
