Key Club Celebrates the Year and Installs New Officers for Next Year
by Maddie Hommey
On Wednesday, May 17th, the WHS Key Club held an end of year celebratory picnic after school at the Walkersville Community Park. Key Club advisor, Erica Carbone, was able to attend the event with her newly born baby!
Individuals drove or walked over to the park after school carrying foods, desserts, and drinks. Key Club provided burgers for all of its members in attendance.
Prior to eating, all members received their certificates and pins for their service to their school and community through Key Club for the 2016-2017 school year. Additionally, each member of the month from this year was recognized and given a certificate of recognition.
“The picnic was a really cool and fun way to celebrate our accomplishments throughout the year while enjoying the nice weather and good food,” said freshman Hally O’Keefe.
After recognizing all of the great members of the club, the many projects the club accomplished this year were reviewed and an induction of the officers for the 2017-2018 school year was held. Each current member passed on the pin of their position to the newly elected individual as they accepted their duties.
“I’m really excited about taking over as editor. I think we have a really good group of people on the board for next year, and our main goal is going to be getting more people involved and hopefully doing more service projects,” said junior Molly Draper.
Two leaders of Key Club in the past two years reflected on the year, the picnic, and the future.
“The picnic was a great way to end the year and celebrate all of our accomplishments and I think everyone enjoyed the picnic. We officially installed our new officers and retired the officers from this year. This year we had almost 100 members and we are one of the most active clubs in the school. I am so glad I got to serve as president during my senior year as joining Key Club during my sophomore year was one of the best decisions I’ve made in high school. I am glad to pass on the responsibility to the next group of officers as I know they will do an amazing job and make our club better,” said senior Harshi Patel.
“The picnic was the perfect way to end such an incredible service year. I am so proud of what the 2016/17 officers accomplished this year and I’m so glad I got to work with them. I know the new board will do amazing things, especially with Kathy as President and Anna as VP. Key Club has taught me so much and has become a special home for me, and I hope that it continues to be a place where people can grow, learn, and serve their community in the best way possible,” said senior Anna Sepanic.
