Math Teacher Kim Gilbert Excited About Learning, and Conveys That Excitement To Her Students
by Joana Haizel-Cobbina
On January 2009, eight years ago, Walkersville High School was blessed with the presence of an amazing math teacher Kimberly Gilbert. Before Gilbert came to Walkersville she was a teacher at Linganore High School. Gilbert’s love for teaching makes her students excited about learning each and everyday. Not a day goes by that you won’t see Gilbert with a wide smile on her face: she’s kind, sweet, beautiful and intelligent.
WHSLP: What’s your favorite thing about teaching?
Gilbert: “(My students). I relate to you guys better than I relate to adults.”
WHSLP: Why did you choose math?
Gilbert: “I’ve always wanted to be a math teacher. My math teacher said I wasn’t smart enough but then I had a really good calculus teacher and because of that I’m here. He made an impression on me.”
WHSLP: How does it feel working with your husband in the same school?
Gilbert: “I never see him, He comes over to check in during lunch sometimes.”
WHSLP: What do you do outside of school?
Gilbert: “I like to snow ski and water ski. I enjoy spending time with my daughter. I love being outdoors. I like summer and winter cause I can be outside but during the Fall and Spring all it does is rain.”
Gilbert’s transition to Walkersville wasn’t easy. Before she got her own classroom, she taught in every math classroom and even in the portables. Gilbert took advantage of every situation she was put in, even with a big smile on her face. Not only are students excited to take her class but they come out with an amazing great and more than above average knowledge in the course they took. Walkersville High School is very blessed to have such an amazing teacher. We hope she continues her amazing journey in teaching.
