Boys Basketball Team Psyched Up for a Great New Season

by Andrew Mori

The Lions are ready for the upcoming basketball season. All the players and coaches are excited and think they’ll do well this season.

Head Coach Mike Mathis said,“I really like our team this year. We have four returning starters and a total of five guys that saw significant playing time last season. I feel like our strengths this year are our versatility and overall basketball IQ. We have several guys who can do a variety of things (dribble, pass, and shoot)  and have a really good understanding on how to play.

“I feel like this will allow us to be very efficient on the offensive end of the floor.  If we buy in defensibly, play hard, and rebound we will have an opportunity to contend for a conference and regional title. I also really like our team chemistry; we have good kids that get along well with one another.”

Junior Elias Baroudi commented,“I’m looking forward to playing with my team and hopefully winning a lot of games.”
Mathis, when asked “Who are some teams you will have trouble with?” responded with  “In terms of our league, we have some very strong teams with Oakdale, Williamsport, Middletown, and Brunswick to name a few. I think it is a very competitive league top to bottom and we will have to come ready to play every game.  Along with our tough league schedule we also play the rest of the Frederick county teams TJ, Frederick, Tuscarora, and Urbana who are always tough.”
Mathis commented on who would start this season,“Right now with Josh Polce out with an injury, our starters are Zack Mathis, Davis Kelley, Jeremiah Sweet, Elias Baroudi, and Hunter Cleaver. When Josh comes back he will definitely be a starter, but I feel like all these guys will play the minutes of a starter.  They can all play!”

Senior Jeremiah Sweet stated, “I think we will do great because we have a great team with good coaching and everyone works hard.”

The whole team is hyped up and ready for the upcoming season and they can’t wait to play and have a great year.
