Eggnog – Delicious Holiday Treat Or Gross Beverage?

by Noah Lind

Is eggnog gross? Or is it delicious? I guess that’s up to you to decide. Eggnog is a favorite holiday treat of many, it only really seems to show up around Christmas time and there’s a lot of people with many different opinions about the weird concoction.

Eggnog is primarily drunk in North America between the United States and Canada. Nog is a type of alcoholic beverage which name means strong ale, so eggnog normally consists of alcohol and milk but children drink it straight. [1]

“I hate eggnog — it’s disgusting and it makes me want to throw up,”  said junior Chidera Ogwulu. Eggnog is a beverage made from eggs, sugar, and milk and its exact origins are unknown but the first sighting of the words eggnog were in a poem written by Maryland resident Jonathan Boucher in 1775. [1]

Originally eggnog consisted of wines and other alcoholic beverages mixed in and that still happens today, but students do not drink alcohol so we can stick to the normal version.

“Eggnog is so gross. It reminds me of medicine or something. I hate it,” junior Randie Burns said with disgust.

Most people seemed to be against the Christmas beverage until junior Alonso Hoes said, “Eh, it’s not bad, I kind of like it to be honest. I wish it came around more than once a year though.”

“I’m not a fan of eggnog but my family always buys it around Christmas and lets it sit in the fridge. My dad likes it but I just don’t really like it that much. It’s weird because my entire family likes it except me,” freshman Jaziah Thompson said. For the most part people are not fans of eggnog, it seems almost more like something no one wants than a great holiday treat.
