Could Oprah Winfrey Really Run For President in 2020?

by Molly Lewing

The night of the 2018 Golden Globes Oprah Winfrey was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille award. Before her award, host Seth Meyers poked fun at how he told now President Donald Trump, that he would never be president. “Some have said that night convinced him to run. So, if that’s true, I just want to say: Oprah, you will never be president! You do not have what it takes. And Hanks! Where’s Hanks? You will never be Vice President. You are too mean and unrelatable. Now we just wait and see.” [1]

While Seth was just making a joke, some believe Oprah will run for president in 2020 due to her powerful acceptance speech. “I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon.” [1]

“I personally think that Oprah would be a good president, but I would rather see a competent experience[d] politician as president,” said senior Parker Montour.

Lots of people believe that Oprah could run, including her long time partner Stedman Graham who said, “It’s up to the people, she would absolutely do it.” [2]

Dan Pfeiffer, a long time aid to former President Barack Obama tweeted, “I slept on it and came to the conclusion that the Oprah thing isn’t that crazy. I don’t know if Oprah would be a good president, but she would definitely be a better president than Trump.”

That’s just it, we don’t know if Oprah would be a good president, but can we really get much worse? “Honestly I could see Oprah as president. I think she has a good perspective on things and she seems like she would be calm and collected in office,” said senior Sarah McElwain.

There are those that do not believe that Oprah should run for president including former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer; “She doesn’t have the political infrastructure, and we’ve seen this before in our history — where people who have tried to pop in who are not in politics and have had a difficult time adjusting.” [3]

“Does [Spicer] realize who he used to work for? I personally don’t think we should have another TV star for president, but I think [Spicer] is being a little hypocritical,” said senior Felicity Borge.

Interviewers Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan had similar reactions. “Sean, Sean, Sean!” Morgan yelled. “The current president of the United States had no political experience! Sean! You were his press secretary! Have you forgotten Donald Trump?” [3]

Oprah Winfrey could very well run for president in 2020, but there is no way to tell for sure yet. Winfrey has shot down ideas of her running for president on multiple occasions, but it seems that could change.
