On December 20th, 2017, the reboot of the iconic 90’s film, Jumanji hit theaters. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle captures the true essence of the original film but mixes it up a bit for younger audiences. The film had slight plot holes but they weren’t crucial to the plot. The film has received a 7.3/10 on IMDB and made $36 million during opening weekend. [1] Although he is a supporting actor, Jack Black steals the show as Professor Shelly Oberon.

The film begins in 1995 when a teenager stumbles upon the original game board and takes it home to their brother. Because it’s the 90’s, board games aren’t cool so the board game transforms itself into a digital game. Making the iconic banging sound, the teen wakes up and plays the game in the middle of the night. We can assume what happens next.

It’s now 2016 and the teenager has still not returned. The audience is introduced to brainiac/introvert Spencer, athlete Fridge, socialite Bethany, and introvert Martha. A series of unimportant events lands the teens in detention, where they find the video game, Jumanji. Thinking that it’s nothing, they decide to play the game. They are sucked into the game with one exception, they are not entering the game as teenagers.

Now, the characters they choose is important to the game and how they play it. Each character has a specific set of strengths and weaknesses.

Spencer’s character is Doctor Smolder Bravestone:

Strengths: Fearless, Intense Smoldering, and strength.

Weaknesses: None

Fridge is now Moose Finbar.

Strengths: Zoology, and Weapons Valet.

Weaknesses: Endurance and Cake.

Bethany is now Professor Shelly Oberon:

Strengths: Cartography.

Weaknesses: Endurance.

Martha is now Ruby Roundhouse:

Strengths: Dance Fighting, and Mixed Martial Arts.

Weaknesses: Venom.

When they first enter the game, they are unfamiliar with their surroundings. Bethany is eaten by a Rhino within the first ten minutes of entering the game. They soon discover that they only have three lives throughout the entire game.

Their mission/goal is to find the missing piece of a statue and return it to its place. But the key to winning Jumanji is having all teammates work together and find the missing piece(s).

Will they beat the game before losing their lives? Watch Jumanji to find out.
