Wonder Woman Should Have Been Nominated for an Oscar

by Molly Lewing

Just a couple days ago nominations for the 90th Annual Academy Award nominations were released. Movies up for Best Picture include: Call Me By Your Name, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, The Post, The Shape of Water, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

While all these movies are quality films, one blockbuster from 2017 was left out. Wonder Woman directed by Patty Jenkins, starring Gal Gadot was not nominated for any awards. The movie made more than $390 million after being released. [1] “I think Wonder Woman was by far the best movie I saw in 2017 besides Beauty and the Beast of course,” said senior Sarah McElwain.

Since the first Academy Awards in 1929, only five women have been nominated for the best director award including one of this year’s nominees Greta Gerwig. Gerwig was nominated for Lady Bird. The only female director to have won the award is Kathryn Bigelow. [2] She won for The Hurt Locker released in 2008.

“Patty Jenkins really should have been nominated for an award for sure. She did such a good job with Wonder Woman it’s really something that she did not get nominated for an award,” said sophomore Emily Goline.

The DC Comics film Suicide Squad won an Oscar at last year’s awards for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling. Suicide Squad only had a 25% on Rotten Tomatoes while Wonder Woman got a whopping 93%. [3] So why was Gadot not nominated for best actress? “Gal Gadot definitely should have been nominated for an Oscar. She did such a good job playing Wonder Woman. She had such a good year and I’m honestly kinda sad that the movie didn’t get nominated for anything,” said senior Felicity Borge.

If you haven’t seen Wonder Woman yet make sure you do. It was by far one of the best films in 2017.
